South African Scout Association - Mumalanga

White River, Mpumalanga, South Africa

Traditionally, support for South African soccer is based especially in the black community and Scouting Mpumalanga, acting in a predominantly rural province, realised the potential of combining soccer and Scouting very early. We have already been using football as a tool for youth development since 2004. The great interest of our youth in this sport inspired Scouting Mpumalanga to want to own our own sporting facility, to be able to reach more children through our programmes. Outline of the Esangweni project: - We would build a multi-purpose sports field at our Scouting campground - We would set up a permanent obstacle course - The children would be able to attend 1-day or weekend workshops or even weeklong camps which include life skills training and soccer practices. - Other children who are not Scouts or street soccer players would be invited to visit the center. - The Scouts would use their peer educator skills to teach many groups of children life skills, which they in turn will take back to their communities. We request that GAMECHANGERS will fund these projects: 1. Civil Earthworks – for the leveling of a sports field 2. Planting grass on the sports field 3. Erection of a permanent obstacle course BUDGET Earthworks (to level playing field) $ 18,400 Obstacle Course $ 2,900 Architect $ 2,500 Project management and communication $ 1,200 TOTAL $ 25,000

AIS Kenya Sports Complex

Ambassadors in Sport Kenya

Nairobi, Kenya

This project is geared to providing the first phase of a larger Sports Complex project that will provide Ambassadors In Sport Kenya (AIS Kenya) with a field and offices to accomplish their mission of Bringing Hope Through Soccer. The field would be the practice field for the Petra Boys Academy, a team of youth from the slums of Nairobi who play football as an alternative to the gangs and drugs that their home environment advocates as a successful life. AIS Kenya uses soccer to draw these young men to a team that is about more than football. The Petra Boys team has life-skills teaching each day before training to address issues of drug abuse, peer pressure, and HIV/AIDS awareness and regularly participates in community service in the neighboring estates. Through this team some boys receive school sponsorship and each boy learns valuable lessons on leadership whereby they can influence their peers to a healthier lifestyle. In addition to the Petra Boys Academy, the project would assist AIS Kenya in their Kickers Clinics which targets boys and girls of ages 7-15. Each Saturday these kids come to the field to play soccer, learn about character, and have fun. Each of the Kickers Clinics coaches are either current or former players of the Petra Boys Academy who have navigated through the challenges of living in the slums. The $25k grant would go towards developing a grass field that can be used by AIS Kenya programs as well as the building of offices at the complex. This field would also provide some of the youth with jobs for maintenance and grounds keeping.

Baclayan Community Sports Facility

Stairway Foundation, Inc.

Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro, Philippines

The Iraya are 1 out of 7 indigenous Mangyan tribes found on Mindoro in the Philippines. In today’s society, Mangyans are seen as poor, dirty, unintelligent, and are often blamed for local crime. Stairway Foundation (SFI) has been working to help break down the barriers that keep them a poor and marginalized group. We recently conducted a needs assessment in an Iraya community called Baclayan. The results showed an elementary school with hungry and often absent children, a lack of school supplies, poor infrastructure, and a lack of space and equipment for play and sports activities. SFI is not shy about dreaming big. We have a project plan for Baclayan that includes sustainable organic farming, a feeding program for the school, donations of books and supplies, and the building of a sports facility. Our goal with the sports facility is to create a program called ‘Sports for All’. Our vision is that it will be utilized by the school children for play and sports activities and by the community children for organized sports leagues. We will offer sports clinics and will train men and women how to coach and referee. This program will be the centerpiece of a broader program for the surrounding local communities. In this, we are hoping to break down the negative stereotypes and prejudices about the Iraya. The sports facility will be built with native material when possible and will include a cement basketball court, a grassy area for volleyball, badminton, and other yard games, seating for spectators and players, and a room in which trainings, workshops, and meetings can be held. The grant money would be used to excavate and level the land, to build a path to access the land, to buy the materials and supplies, and to pay the architect and laborers.
